Real-Time Traffic Simulation for Reggio Calabria
Supporting Advanced Traffic Management
The Municipality of Reggio Calabria, in partnership with Almaviva and using Bentley Systems' OpenPaths CUBE software, developed a real-time traffic simulation model to support advanced traffic management. The model uses a custom zonal system derived from ISTAT census data and adapted to meet the resolution required by Teralytics, the provider of demand data. A total of 47 internal zones and 2 external zones were defined, with demand matrices constructed for typical weekdays, weekends, and holidays using mobile phone data for March and July 2023. Each day type was broken down into 96 quarter-hour intervals to match the model’s 15-minute update frequency.

The road network was digitized from TomTom routable data, preserving detailed road geometry and including penalty files for manoeuvre restrictions. Real-time traffic counts and event data, such as lane closures or incidents, are sent every 15 minutes from the municipality's traffic control centre to CUBE. The model then simulates current conditions and forecasts four future states (up to +60 minutes), adjusting road capacity and speed based on events and dynamically updating demand matrices with the latest counts.
The outputs—flow, speed, density, travel time, and performance ratios—are exported in DBF format for use in the traffic management platform. This integration enables continuous traffic monitoring and short-term forecasting, ensuring that the Municipality of Reggio Calabria can respond proactively to disruptions and optimize urban mobility in near real-time.
