Accessibility Mapping in the Dolomites

Using TomTom's Traffic Stats for Accessibility Mapping in the Dolomites

Minoter SpA commissioned citiEU Consultancy Ltd to conduct a transport study on the accessibility and catchment area of Corte delle Dolomiti, located in the Municipality of Borca di Cadore, Italy. A crucial part of this project was the use of TomTom’s Traffic Stats historical data, which provided detailed insights into traffic patterns and mobility in the region.

The study aimed to analyse the accessibility of Corte delle Dolomiti, a tourist destination in the Dolomites, using advanced traffic data to understand travel times, congestion, and the characteristics of the catchment area.

Key Findings

  • Catchment area analysis: The study identified that 40% of the catchment area’s population resides in main municipalities (Conegliano, and Vittorio Veneto), with travel times ranging from 50–80 minutes depending on traffic conditions.

  • The study confirmed that major road networks such as the A27 motorway, SS51, and the main roads within the study area, play a crucial role in regional mobility, impacting access to Corte delle Dolomiti.

  • In free-flow conditions (late night/early morning), travel times were significantly shorter, but during peak hours, delays of up to 20–30 minutes were observed on key routes.

  • Accessibility maps generated for different time slots (weekdays vs. holidays) highlighted peak congestion hours and free-flow conditions.

  • The analysis revealed that travel times to Corte delle Dolomiti increased significantly during peak traffic hours, especially between 10:30–11:30 AM and 4:30–5:30 PM.

  • The study highlighted the strong influence of tourist traffic on congestion, particularly during the summer month of August, with holidays (Friday–Sunday) showing worse traffic conditions compared to weekdays.

This analysis reinforces the importance of using Big Data to understand traffic patterns and plan infrastructure improvements, especially in tourist-heavy regions. It also highlights the challenges of managing congestion during peak seasons and the need for sustainable mobility solutions.
